Two midfielders from the academy, Tino Anjorin and Lewis Bate are amongst the substitutions for todays game. For the hosts Barnsley they have former Chelsea academy player Bradley Collins in goal, just like they did for when Chelsea beat Barnsley 6-0 in the Carabao Cup win earlier this season. Werner talks about his new position under Tuchel

Image
Timo Werner explains how tweak in his position under head coach Thomas Tuchel contributed towards his match-winning performance against Sheffield United.  In recent matches there has been a noticeable improvement in Werner's fortunes, none more highlighted so than last nights trip to South Yorkshire to face Sheffield United at Brammal Lane, where he was the creator in both of Chelsea's goals as the Blues won 2-1. The freedom that Werner has been provided with to play on the shoulders of defenders and then drop deep between the lines was clearly evident yesterday as he looked a constant threat throughout Chelsea's victory with his running both on and off the ball. Werner revealed after the game that a key change in his role since Tuchel has taken over as Chelsea head coach, playing in a more central position and closer to his fellow strikers, is helping him to exploit and find space in order to attack opposition defences. Werner said 'Every manager is different in how th

Thomas Tuchel's analysis on a difficult but deserved win, the decisiveness of Werner plus gives update on Pulisic and Thiago Silva

Thomas Tuchel's first taste of a premier league game outside of London took place in freezing conditions in South Yorkshire against tough opposition, so there was little wonder he was happy with the way in which his team stood up to the challenge at Bramall Lane.  They may be at the bottom of the table but Sheffield United have proven to be problematic opponents for just about every side in the premier league this season, and tonight was no different. The blades should have gone ahead inside 30 seconds and then had a penalty overturned by VAR before Chelsea took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Mason Mount. Sheffield United got back on level terms though through an Antonio Rudiger own goal on for Timo Werner, who created the opening for Mason Mount, to win Chelsea a penalty like he had done at Tottenham. Just like at Tottenham, Jorginho netted what would prove to be the winner, leaving Tuchel to reflect on a third consecutive league victory. On today's game Tuchel sa

Timo Werner and Mason Mount Celebrate Chelsea's opening goal against Sheffield United For the second time in the space of four days a penalty from Jorginho proved to be the difference as Chelsea moved up to fifth in the table with a win over Sheffield United at Brammal Lane. Just like the game on Thursday against Tottenham again it was Timo Werner who was fouled, but this time Jorginho opted to go for hid more traditional penalty technique to send goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way. Jorginho is now Chelsea's second top goalscorer in the league with five goals to his name. The winger which came in the 58th minute after Antonio Rudiger had put through his own net awkwardly for what was an unfortunate first goal conceded under Thomas Tuchel. Rudiger more than made up for his mistake with a series of vital blocks and clearances as Chelsea doggedly defended their narrow lead later on in the game. Chelsea enjoyed a couple of early let offs in the game, not least when Sheffield U

Christensen replaces the injured Thiago Silva, Chilwell replaces Marcos Alonso and Giroud leads the frontline with Callum-Hudson Odoi dropping to the bench.  There is no Christian Pulisic for today's game but there is a return to the bench for Kurt Zouma after injury. Billy Gilmour has his first involvement under Tuchel with a place on the bench. Pre match briefing + team news for Sheffield United

Image
Chelsea move from North London to South Yorkshire as a string of away games continues for the Blues with a visit to Brammal Lane to face Sheffield United on Sunday.  Beginning on Sunday, Chelsea will embark on a five day tour of South Yorkshire, as they take on two clubs separated by 12 miles of green belt, covered in snow. Before Chelsea face Barnsley in the FA Cup there is the small matter of facing Sheffield United in the premier league, with both sides having regained some form as of late.  Bramall Lane is one of those rare away fixtures where the biggest ever win for Chelsea was their maiden bow with a 3-0 victory back in January 1908 with George Hilsden getting on the scoresheet twice. Chelsea's most recent success came back in 2006 with goals from Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard. Sheffield United have recently discovered their cutting edge, winning five of their past seven games in all competitions. They hold an advantage as they have had an extra two days preparation over

Goalscorer Jorginho on Chelsea's win, his penalty technique and remaining humble

Image
It was an emphatic penalty from Jorginho which separated both Chelsea and Tottenham on Thursday night, after the game the midfielder spoke about his new technique for taking a penalty as well the team's hard and humble work since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel to Chelsea. You wouldn't have known that the last 2 of Jorginho's 5 penalties have been saved this season, such was the efficiency in which he dispatched his penalty kick in North London. Somewhat of a surprise considering Chelsea's dominance throughout the game, Jorginho's strike from 12 yards out was the only goal of the game leaving Chelsea's vice-captain to reflect on a terrific away win. 'It's a great feeling' says Jorginho. 'We worked very hard. We knew it would be a difficult game, it was a great London derby against a very good side. We thoroughly deserved the win.  'The first half was excellent. We created lots of chances and could and probably should have scored more goals. We s

Jorginho smashes the ball past Hugo Lloris to give Chelsea the lead A penalty from Jorginho, smashed rather than placed into the Tottenham net in the first half , proved to be the difference as Thomas Tuchel secured his first away win as Chelsea head coach. On a cold rainy night in North London, it was no more than Chelsea deserved as the result consigned former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to back to back defeats in the premier league for the first time in his managerial career. The victory also moved Chelsea above Tottenham in the league table. Chelsea sit i sixth place only four points of fourth place Liverpool.  Goalscorer Jorginho ditched his previous little jump style following his recent failures from the penalty spot, after some sharpness from Timo Werner which drew the foul in the penalty box from Eric Dier. The goal was nothing more than Chelsea deserved for an excellent display in the first half which Chelsea totally dominated despite creating a few more chances in the secon

Image
Thiago Silva in action against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League Thiago Silva sits down and explains why he is happy to work under head coach Thomas Tuchel for second time and outlines what he expects to achieve for the remainder of the season in an interview which was printed in the programme notes for the game against Burnley. The Brazilian defender will know Thomas Tuchel better than anyone having spend two seasons playing under the current Chelsea head coach whilst at PSG, whilst winning the Ligue 1 title in both his seasons in Paris along with reaching the final of the champions league last year. There are mixed feelings for Thiago Silva with Chelsea legend Frank Lampard's departure from the club as head coach, however Silva says the arrival of Tuchel is proof that there are always new experiences in football even for a player who has witnessed so much in a ling, glittering and successful career.  Ahead of Sunday's victory over Burnley in Chelsea's matchday programm

Marcos Alonso on goalscoring return and using win as a springboard

Image
Marcos Alonso with Chelsea's second goal in a 2-0 victory over Burnley Marcos Alonso has called on his Chelsea team mates to use the first win they secured against Burnley in Thomas Tuchel's second game in charge as a stepping stone to propel themselves higher up in the premier league table.  The 30 year old Spaniard was one of two Spanish defenders to score in Chelsea's lunchtime victory over Burnley , his spectacular late strike later on securing the three points after captain Cesar Azpiliqueta had netted the opener in the first half.  Alonso back in the side for the first time since September operated in the left wing-back position in the 3-4-3 position deployed by Thomas Tuchel , a system which he has excelled in for Chelsea under Antonio Conte in Chelsea's title winning campaign of 2016/17. His goal was emphatically taken which excellent control on both chest and knee before thumping a volley into the far corner . Afterwards Alonso admitted that the overall shape o

Match Preview and Chelsea team news for Burnley

Image
Match Preview Chelsea welcome Burnley to Stamford Bridge in the premier league on Sunday  A third straight home fixture for Chelsea as Burnley from the North-West of England arrive in South West London. Head coach Thomas Tuchel's second match in charge is the first game kicking off in daylight since November last year.  Hosting a robust claret over a Sunday lunch appears to sound as if the halcyon days are as good as it gets in lockdown, The main course being served is Chelsea vs Burnley at Stamford Bridge which pips the third longest serving coach across the English system Sean Dyche against most recent arrival Thomas Tuchel. Despite being dominant with the ball on Wednesday night against Wolves this was not enough to hand Thomas Tuchel a winning start to his tenure at Chelsea, however, the Bavarian has had more days in order to instil his approach in order to prepare for his second consecutive league game at Stamford Bridge. Tuchel said 'if we take care of our performances t

Thomas Tuchel's thoughts on 0-0 draw with Wolves

Image
Thomas Tuchel was impressed with Chelsea's Intensity and Courage in the draw against Wolves German head coach Thomas Tuchel had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Wolves in his first game in charge of Chelsea, however the German saw plenty of promising signs to build on after only having one day to work with his players in preparation for the game.  Tuchel was appointed Chelsea head coach exactly 24 hours before Chelsea were due to play Wolves at Stamford Bridge meaning preparations were very limited.  There will no doubt be an element of frustration amongst the players with not being able to take three points from a game dominated by Chelsea from start to finish, instead having to be content with a 0-0 draw despite coming so close to winning the game with the last kick.  However Tuchel was very impressed with how much of his message and preferred style of play had been taken on board by the team in a short space of time, ensuring he has a solid base to work on moving forwards.
