Young players can make the step here says Thomas Tuchel
Tuchel believes that homegrown players at Chelsea can make the step up into the first team such as Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi |
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel insists that it is important that Chelsea have an identity with the homegrown players at the heart of Chelsea's team and believes that the quality is there for this to be achieved.
When asked about the importance of the club producing youngsters during his media press conference to preview the game against Tottenham and he responded with praise of both the physical and technical qualities he has seen from the academy graduates in Chelsea's team, as well the mentality adopted to rise to any challenges.
With the likes of Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham have featured in both of Tuchel's games in charge , whilst Reece James made an appearance of the bench during the victory over Wolves over the weekend.
Tuchel stated ' the guys we have here currently it has been a pleasure to work with them.'
'First of all they have the quality but they also have the physical quality required to play in the premier league. I am very aware of how tough it is to play for Chelsea and compete for trophies but this is the challenge.'
'I'm extremely pleased that all the lads in the Chelsea squad are now aware of this and understand that this challenge is hard. It does something to your character and your approach towards to games as well as training.'
'It's vital that we have this and can trust and rely on them and confuse them being young and experienced with them not having any quality or having to rely on other players. I assure you it is absolutely not this. The youngsters will be given every chance possible to make and leave their footsteps here.'
'In the end we have to accept that it is all about the quality and delivering in key moments when you need to deliver. There are no gifts for anyone.'
Tuchel has also been keeping his eye on the up and coming youngsters who have been working within Chelsea's academy programme.
Chelsea's u23s have not played a match since December but played a in-house game at Cobham earlier during the week which caught Tuchel's attention.
He explained ' I had a brief look from the balcony at the in-house game.'
'I was not able to go over as we have different zones which we have to respect but from the balcony I saw the games between the 18 year olds and I have to say they played to a really high level.'
