Marcos Alonso on goalscoring return and using win as a springboard

Marcos Alonso with Chelsea's second goal in a 2-0 victory over Burnley

Marcos Alonso has called on his Chelsea team mates to use the first win they secured against Burnley in Thomas Tuchel's second game in charge as a stepping stone to propel themselves higher up in the premier league table.

The 30 year old Spaniard was one of two Spanish defenders to score in Chelsea's lunchtime victory over Burnley , his spectacular late strike later on securing the three points after captain Cesar Azpiliqueta had netted the opener in the first half.

Alonso back in the side for the first time since September operated in the left wing-back position in the 3-4-3 position deployed by Thomas Tuchel , a system which he has excelled in for Chelsea under Antonio Conte in Chelsea's title winning campaign of 2016/17.

His goal was emphatically taken which excellent control on both chest and knee before thumping a volley into the far corner . Afterwards Alonso admitted that the overall shape of the team enabled him to get into more advanced positions in the box where he could cause problems for Burnley.

Alonso explained ' it enabled me to have more freedom to attack as we had solid cover in defence bit it's not all about the system'. 'When we are more organised and together we all know what we need to do and where we need to be on the pitch then the potential for this team to achieve things is huge.'

'We still have a long way to go until the season ends to show and prove to everyone the deserve to be in a higher position in the league than where we are currently and we have to fight for this.'

When asked about his goal, Alonso said he wasn't sure if it was the best goal of  his career but he enjoyed the moment regardless.

He said 'I haven't watched it on TV yet,' 'It was good that my goal helped the team but I am just happy with the three points and am very happy for the team. We must get back to the top,  or try to be as close as possible to the top and today was a great start.'

Alonso completed 90 minutes for the first time since the opening game of the season 19 weeks previously, the wing-back could have been forgiven for feeling a bit leggy in the final stages of the game but showed no signs of fatigue as he fired Chelsea's second goal of the afternoon.

Alonso was placed in the team instead of Ben Chilwell was explained by Thomas Tuchel as a key decision in combating Burnley's physical and aerial threats, his performance overall was the perfect reply to answer any doubters on his ability to contribute.

'We knew it would be dangerous against Burnley especially with their long balls and set-pieces and I was glad to help, Alonso added. 'it's been a while since I played but I am working hard and am very happy that I was ready for today's game.'

'There have been lots of things said but I like to work, be quiet and do my talking on the pitch and that performance as for the fans. It's good to get our reward and hopefully there will be many more to come.
