Cesar Azpiliqueta in action against Burnley |
Cesar Azpiliqueta takes time to sit down and look at ending a year long wait for a goal and the captain had Callum-Hudson Odoi to thank as the pair combined to good effect.
Forty minutes had passed in Chelsea's game against Burnley without the Blues breaking the deadlock despite getting into some promising areas. On the back of a 0-0 draw against Wolves there were signs of nerves in front of goal, but Azpiliqueta showed a cool head to fire into the roof of the net from a cute reverse pass from Callum-Hudson Odoi.
It provided Chelsea with a welcome boost with half time approaching.
'I saw an opportunity tin front to make a run' said Azpiliqueta.
'Callum did really well as he drove at defenders which created space for me to run into. As soon as I arrived I didn't have much time to think , I tried to hit it as quickly as possible.
'Luckily it went in the back of the net and helped the team. It has been over a year since my last goal. I am not used to this but it felt great to get the win and not just this the way in which we won the game was very important.
'Overall it was a good team performance, As a team we controlled the game really well. We moved the ball quickly, created chances and defended well. We didn't concede a shot throughout the game so overall it was a good performance. It's a positive step in the right direction.
Azpiliqueta was joined on the scoresheet by Marcos Alonso , who capped his return back to the side since September with a tremendous volley which sealed victory later on.
Azpiliqueta believes that the impact and return of his fellow Spanish compatriot serves to highlight the depth in the squad, which he says will bode really well with a busy second half of the season getting underway.
Azpiliqueta stated 'Marcos has shown real quality in the box and scored a lot of important goals for us.'
'He returned back to the team and I am very pleased with both his performance and his goal. We know what he is able to provide for the team in his position.'
'Every individual in our squad is important. Everybody started from zero with the arrival of the new manager and the competition between us players. It's healthy and provides people with opportunities.
Azpiliqueta added 'we are far from where we need to be but with the arrival of the manager in the second half of the season and we still have everything to play for.'
'Everyone here is ambitious so we have to keep working as we have an important game on Thursday.'
