Chelsea vs Tottenham: Team News and Pre-Match Update

Xabi Alonso confirms that defender Malo Gusto remains in contention to face Tottenham tomorrow as well as providing injury updates on Emi Martinez, Pep Chavarria and Emmanuel Emegha.

Chelsea welcome a familiar foe to Stamford Bridge on Saturday as Roberto De Zerbi brings his Tottenham side to West London for what promises to be a fiercely contested London derby.

The Blues head into the fixture on the back of two impressive Premier League victories, beginning with a commanding 5-1 win over Bournemouth before following it up with a 2-0 victory away to Everton.

Tottenham, meanwhile, secured their first league win of the campaign last time out, beating Coventry 3-1 at home. However, they are still searching for their first away win of the season.

Following Friday’s training session at Cobham, Xabi Alonso addressed the media in his usual pre-match press conference, providing updates on several players ahead of Saturday’s clash.

Alonso confirmed that Malo Gusto is fit to return after missing Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton. However, Pep Chavarría will remain unavailable.

Speaking about the pair, Alonso said: “Malo is fine, and Pepe is training a little bit more, but he will not make it in time for the Tottenham game.”

Emmanuel Emegha will also miss the fixture as he continues his recovery. The Dutch striker, who joined Chelsea in the summer, is yet to make his debut for the club but is making progress and beginning to feel better.

Alonso confirmed that Emegha is improving but stressed that more time will be needed before he can return to action.

Emi Martínez will also be unavailable against Tottenham and is expected to miss the next few weeks following the injury he sustained against Everton.

The Argentine was stretchered off in the second half after colliding with Jarrad Branthwaite and was taken to hospital for further assessment. He subsequently underwent surgery on his jaw.

Providing an update on Martínez, Alonso confirmed that the goalkeeper is recovering well but will remain sidelined for the next few matches.
