Tuchel on his intentions to reward Chilwell

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel said that he could understand Ben Chilwell's disappointment in being left out of the Chelsea team currently and has stated the he sees a lot of potential in Chilwell in becoming a big player for Chelsea.

Ben Chilwell at Stamford Bridge from Leicester in the summer and shone under Tuchel's predecessor Frank Lampard, having suffered initially with a heel injury.

Ever since Tuchel's arrival at Chelsea, Chilwell has seen his playing time reduced, with the German impressed with Marco's Alonso's display at wing-back.

Tuchel however, insists that the door is not necessarily closed for Chilwell though and hopes to reward the left-back with minutes soon.

Tuchel stated 'Chilly is a player with enormous talent and I will find opportunities to provide him with minutes on the pitch because this is what he deserves.'

'It was a very difficult decision in selecting Marcos over Chilly in our game against Burnley where we opted to go with a five at the back because I felt that Marcos is more familiar with this position. Alonso had previously played in this position under Antonio Conte and this was a decision I went for.'

'We opted to go for Marcos ahead of Chilly in our game against Burnley due to how strong he is in the air, because we had a feeling that Burnley would pose more of a threat in the air and also Marcos would also be the ideal source of attack for our set-pieces. Of course yes I know that he scored the decisive goal in our victory against Burnley and it would have been a lot easier to have left him out. In our game against Tottenham we didn't make that many changes in this position either.'

'I spoke with Ben and told him that he must believe me when I say I can see both his talent and his potential and he will become a big player for us. With Ben I see that he is a nice guy, is a very reflective person and is intelligent.'

'I am looking at many different ways in which to reward him. His performance against Sheffield United was very good, which was both important for him and the team.'

Tuchel in his pre-match press conference was then asked if he understood Chilwell's frustration at losing his place in the team through not fault of his own?

Tuchel answered this question by saying ' Yes I could see this being possible that is looking at the current situation.' having said this, I hope that he does not dwell on this too much because he has the trust from us to reward him.'

'We are looking at ways in which to reward him, as this is what he deserves. But at the same time, we want to make it fair for everyone by providing a fresh start for each individual player, regardless of how much we spent on them or how many games they have previously played.'

'Right now there is an opportunity for Marcos and he has taken it very well but this is far from the end in term of Ben Chilwell's development at Chelsea.'
