Tuchel on difficulties at Barnsley plus highlighting a player who made the difference

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel was fully prepared to admit that he was thankful to have left Barnsley with a victory on Thursday, However as a source of satisfaction, Tuchel pointed to the victory achieved at Oakwell which puts his side into the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

The only goal of the game was netted in by Tammy Abraham to separate the sides for the large majority of the game, Chelsea made 10 changes from the premier league win at the weekend, were matched by Barnsley from the championship. It was in stark contrast to the last outing between the two sides which resulted in a massive 6-0 win for Chelsea in the Carabao cup earlier during the season.

Tuchel said before returning to London 'I have to be honest yes I am relieved.' 'But we can now stop all of the analysis we have done it and Chelsea are through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

'We know we can clearly play better than this, this was far from our best performance Tuchel said. 'To cope with the difficulties today was hard for us.'

'To be able to cope with the pressure, to escape the pressure in our own half before we made some changes at halftime, we played much better in the second half , in a different structure so to help the team.'

'We played it extremely well until we scored a good goal but after that, Barnsley took lots of risks and played aggressively. We had to cope with the first challenges, had problems in coping with the second balls and so in the end it was too deep for many minutes.'

Tuchel said 'we were very lucky twice, 'In the first half we had Kepa to thank, in the second half we were saved by Tammy's header on our goal line, so in the end I have to admit that we struggled to get going but in a competition like the FA Cup it is often like this.

' I don't want to be too harsh on my players. The circumstances were not so easy for us but we went through which is the most important thing.'

The clearance made by Tammy Abraham which Tuchel mentioned came 14 minutes after scoring his 12th goal of the season and cam 12 minutes before the ned of the game.

Tuchel said 'clearly he has made the difference, but you cannot leave out the pass by Billy Gilmour, nor the run from Reece James, so it was a very good goal at the end of a very good combination. But yes, Tammy does score very decisive goals in cup games and this is good for him because as a striker it is important to score. Of course that stop on the line was crucial.'

In the next round of the FA Cup Chelsea face the side they beat last weekend Sheffield United.

'In last Sunday's game I stated that it felt like a cup game and it was played like that and I was happy in the way we adapted in the way we did and accepted this challenge , because it was a very intense game and we took away a win which we deserved said Tuchel as he reacted to the draw.'

'It was difficult for us to win however, it will be a more difficult game in the quarter-final against Sheffield  United in the most prestigious cup competition in the world. We are happy that we will be facing them at Stamford Bridge as it saves us a lot of travel however, we will prepare for another intensive game and will be ready, I am absolutely sure of this.'
