Tuchel's first impressions of Mason Mount and Billy Gilmour

Mason Mount and Thomas Tuchel following Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Wolves

There will have been eyebrows raised when Thomas Tuchel did not select Mason Mount in his first starting line-up however the new boss is is already seeing the enormous ability and passion that the midfielder possesses.

Tuchel painfully pointed that his team selection against Wolves may well have been the most unfair in his reign at Chelsea when you consider he only had one training session which to work with his new players.

The decision made to omit Mount , a regular starter in all but two league games up to that point and most noticeably Chelsea's main in form player was always likely to be met with raised eyebrows, however, Tuchel simply insisted that he simply chose to play experience during a difficult time. He is however, now excited to help the 22 year old midfielder flourish.

At today's press conference the German said 'I currently like what I am seeing from Mason so far, he has an amazing personality, he is a nice guy, a competitive guy who possesses a lot of talent.'

More important than this, every game which I have watched Mason so far he always leaves his heart on the pitch, he cares for Chelsea 100 per cent every time he plays and this is the best basis for big development.

'I'm very happy to have him around and I will not stop pushing him , guiding him and trusting him. There is absolutely nothing to worry about here.

One player not included in Chelsea's matchday squad was Billy Gilmour , another young midfielder who has been involved less than Mount this season.

Tuchel acknowledges that the Scottish midfielder is at a different personal moment in comparison to Mount, he doesn't expect Gilmour to leave on loan as some social media outlets have reported.

Speaking on Gilmour Tuchel said 'I have a good impression of Billy. He is a very strategic guy, who has very high level of understanding his game, he is very good in the first contact and is very clever in his positioning.

'We shall see if Billy has the physical level in order to compete in the centre of midfield in in one of the most physical and demanding leagues in the world,  he has super quick feet, has very quick decision making abilities  and is very good in his positioning which is something like I mentioned.

As I mentioned we have 21, 22 players to participate in three competitions. There is absolutely no need for us to get rid of any players.

This is the first time in the managerial career of Thomas Tuchel in which he has taken charge of a club midway through a season, and it is, as we all know, not just any old season but a season taking place in the wake of a global pandemic.

He identifies one of his biggest challenges as nurturing a sense of unity within the team whilst abiding to rules stating people cannot come in close proximity.

It is crucial for me to create an atmosphere which is special and to create a bond on a daily basis here at Cobham in the dressing room, however, due to the circumstances of Covid-19 we have instilled social distancing rules so currently, for example we are using three changing rooms for our team. We can't all use the gym at the same time and we cannot do any big celebrations in training when we do a six v six game for instance.

'We tend to miss all of these little details which we would not talk about normally. These can often make the difference in me creating a particular bond and a certain gel between the players, creating an atmosphere you feel when you enter a dressing room where the players are speaking with one another, bonding with one another and arguing with one another. This simply doesn't exist, and currently the biggest impact is empty stadiums.

'It affects everyone on a personal level. Some of our players are more worried than others, some are very worried about their parents and grandparents. This is an extremely huge thing to be concerned about, however, there is no time to overthink about this.'
