Hudson-Odoi reveals how Tuchel wanted him and the team to play

Chelsea's Man of the match on Wednesday night Callum Hudson-Odoi caught the eye despite being asked to play in a rather unfamiliar position.

Man of the match Callum Hudson-Odoi put in a brilliant performance in a 0-0 against Wolves

The youngster was started at right back by Thomas Tuchel in the Germans' first game in charge and was later switched to the left hand side later on in the game as Christian Pulisic came on. The game as a whole finished in a 0-0 stalemate with not a lot of chances although changes began to increase for Chelsea nearer the end of the game. One of those was a shot from Hudson-Odoi as he cut in from the left hand side only for the shot to be saved.

However it was not only Hudson-Odoi's attacking work which saw him awarded the man of the match, it was in fact his duties as a wing-back  which were evident as the game ended when he snuffed out a dangerous attack from Wolves.

Afterwards, Hudson-Odoi said 'I spotted it straight away'. ' I remember saying to myself that I needed to get back as quickly as I could and I gave all of my effort to ensure I got a little touch on the ball to get it away.'

In acknowledgement of the position he was asked to play. Hudson-Odoi said 'it was something completely new for me.'

Hudson-Odoi said 'It was my first time trying the new position in training and I felt okay playing in that position, it was not a problem for me. It was a good feeling playing in any position and no matter what position the manager asks me to play in I will try my hardest every week.'

He then went onto add how Tuchel had asked him to attack, and how he was able to do this as more often against sides which play very defensive football.

He also added that Tuchel had wanted him to play as direct as possible and to get at full-backs and defenders whenever possible.

Hudson-Odoi explained that Tuchel has a greater understanding of his attacking players and their ability to be free and be able to score goals however, Hudson-Odoi stated that Tuchel wanted his attackers to be more direct and keeping pushing to bet goals and assists. Hudson-Odoi explained how Tuchel told him to work up and down the line , to be more direct and to stay as high and wide as possible.

Hudson-Odoi added 'I try to break the lines whenever possible and adopt different movements in order to get to the ball. Tuchel wants us to keep going in behind and try to find good passes and be able to find different ways to break teams down rather than beat teams every time when in possession of the ball.'

'I felt really fit and sharp through the whole game, trying to be direct as possible and trying get at defenders as much as possible, and I feel as collective team that we did well.

'We were working very hard, to try and break their back five as quickly as possible. There were times where it was difficult. When we were trying to get in behind them but they were recovering well so it was very hard to make the extra pass to break it.'

Hudson Odoi said  ' I think as a team we need to be more clinical with our passing. We just need to add the end product to finish it off. Hopefully we can improve this on Sunday.'

Thomas Tuchel in his post-match analyses stated that he was pleased with the intensity and the energy of the whole team as well as the organisation on the pitch.

On his managers words Hudson-Odoi said 'when half time came he simply told us to keep the same mentality and to continue what we were doing as we were playing well, working really hard and playing with a high intensity was really important for us. So we needed to make sure that we pushed and pushed to come out with the same mentality and intensity in order to score a goal.'

'From the start the manager told us to just go out there and to play with aggression and intensity, you could see that we applied this onto the pitch and were unlucky to to score a goal.'

Hudson-Odoi concluded the interview by saying 'I felt that it was a game we deserved to win as we had the right mentality from the start.' We will reflect upon this and try to be more clinical in our next game.'
