Chelsea have suffered a massive blow in their attempts to sign Bayern Munch left back David Alaba.
Reports in Spain are suggesting that Alaba has reached an agreement with Spanish giants Real Madrid to join them on a free transfer when his Bayern Munich contract expires at the end of the season.
In addition to this Alaba is set to sign a 4 year contract with the La Liga giants within the next few weeks as he gets the opportunity to fulfil his dream of playing with Los Blanco's.
The news comes as a huge blow for Chelsea alongside clubs such as Liverpool and Paris St-Germain who had also been linked with signing the 28 year old.
The writing has been on the wall regarding Alaba's departure from the Allianz Arena for quite some time now with Bayern Munich chief executive Karl Heinz-Rummenigge announcing last month that the club had failed to reach an agreement with Alaba over a new contract.
Rummenigge stated that "Bayern did everything we could to try and reach an agreement", "We had lots of conversations, we wanted answers by the end of October. However, this did not happen and I am unsure whether further negotiations will take place.
" I want to make it clear that the offer we proposed showed exactly how much we value him, he didn.t accept our offer.
Given Alaba's ability to play as a left-back as well as a centre-back, he would no doubt have added a touch of quality to this Chelsea squad.
However, with that said the Blues already have made plans in the defensive department during the summer transfer window.
Firstly, Chelsea have the option available to extend Thiago Silva's contact with the option of a further 12 months and early signs showed that Chelsea were keen to trigger it.
However, should the club opt not to offer the Brazilian another season, then it would appear that RB Leipzig's French centre-back Dayot Upamecano will be Chief executive Marina Granovskaia's main transfer signings this summer.
The Frenchman has previously been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks, and according to claims from the Guardian suggest he could leave for a cut price £37.4 million at the end of the season.
However, Chelsea will face competition from the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Liverpool for Upamecano's signing as they look to soften the blow on potentially missing out on Alaba.
